The Bureau of Building and Street Repair (BSR) provides professional construction, repair, and remodeling to City-owned facilities. We perform emergency-repair services twenty-four (24) hours a day to ensure that Police, Fire, and other Public Safety operations are fully functional; and oversee paving and street repair work, including patch paving and filling potholes, as well sewer repair, which includes brickwork.
Public Works currently has a vacancy for a Maintenance Manager (7263) within the Bureau of Building and Street Repair.
Role description
Under general direction, as the Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible for planning, scheduling, and supervising staff engaged in the maintenance, construction, and repair activities for multiple large buildings and grounds. You will be involved in developing, implementing, and enforcing policies and procedures related to maintenance, construction planning, scheduling, and operations. You will also oversee budget preparation and maintenance planners and coordinate the evaluation and scheduling of maintenance requests.
Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as a Maintenance Manager may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist in preparing, developing, and revising maintenance and repair objectives, policies, procedures, and ongoing deferred maintenance programs.
- Supervise personnel engaged in maintenance, repair, emergency maintenance dispatch, and preparing labor, materials, and equipment estimates.
- Assign, review, and approve work, evaluate staff performance, and ensure their development through training and employee development programs.
- Direct the work of craft supervisors and workers, resolving craft jurisdictional disputes.
- Organize appropriate training for staff on particular equipment use, HAZMAT, and other necessary training.
- Coordinate the completion of maintenance and repair projects, ensuring they align with approved policies and practices.
- Investigate, resolve, and respond to complaints; prepare correspondence regarding complaints; and confer with site administrators, division heads, craft supervisors, vendors, and contractors.
- Review construction documents, organize meetings to discuss construction information, and ensure proper equipment certification, such as high-reach equipment.
- Visit work sites and review control reports regarding project status, work projections, maintenance procedures, and materials used to ensure efficient and effective maintenance, repair, and operations.
- Investigate improved maintenance methods, materials, supplies, and tools, and make recommendations to improve work productivity.
- Develop, enforce, and research work standards and guidelines to be applied in maintenance planning; prepare formal standards and procedures manuals.
- Ensure safety protocols and procedures are implemented and followed.
- Perform other maintenance and operation-related duties as required.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education, training, and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain this would be:
Experience:
Four (4) years of experience supervising skilled craft workers engaged in maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds.
AND
License:
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Valid Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.
Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.
- Experience with using a computerized work order tracking system, such as Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
