Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Project Manager I (5502) within the Infrastructure Design and Construction Division.
The Infrastructure Design and Construction Division
The Infrastructure Design and Construction Division of San Francisco Public Works, led by the City Engineer, provides engineering planning and design services, project management, and construction management services for a range of capital improvement projects supporting the City's streets and infrastructure. In addition, its Bureau of Street-use and Mapping, which includes the office of the County Surveyor, ensures that City sidewalks and streets are safe and accessible by permitting and inspecting the use of the public right of way and is responsible for records of survey, lot line adjustments, mapping subdivisions and condominium conversions.
Role description
As a Project Manager 1, you will lead multi-discipline teams of engineers and consultants to ensure that projects are delivered to City standards and public expectations. These projects often require special reporting to the eleven (11) City Supervisorial Districts and will require you to respond effectively and promptly to management concerns and complaints. In this role, you will also ensure that all work is coordinated with other private utility companies and City infrastructure projects and oversee scope, schedule, and budget for all phases of project delivery from planning, design, construction through financial closeout.
Additionally, you will represent the Department of Public Works on two projects that will result in permanent right-of-way improvements including sidewalk widenings, pedestrian bulbouts, signalized pedestrian crossings, roadway & utility improvements, & other infrastructure improvements.
Important and Essential Duties:
As a Project Manager I, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Overseeing scope, schedule, and budget for all phases of project delivery from planning, design, and construction through financial closeout.
- Preparing and reviewing scope statements, schedules, budgets, funding plans, memorandums of understanding, permit applications, grant applications, grant invoices, design packages, payment packages, official memos, presentations, press release packages, and other project documents to oversee project delivery.
- Monitoring and tracking project progress and expenditures and implementing cost controls.
- Applying for and monitoring grants and negotiating and resolving contract disputes.
- Identifying and mitigating project risks in all project phases.
- Responding effectively and promptly to management and Supervisors’ concerns and complaints.
- Facilitating regularly scheduled design or construction coordination meetings with all stakeholders to discuss progress and resolve conflicts.
- Building trusting relationships with clients, City leaders, contractors, and community leaders and facilitating effective meetings and making presentations to City government entities, clients, and the community.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in architecture, engineering, or planning plus four years of responsible architectural, engineering or construction management experience, OR
A Bachelor's Degree in another field plus six years of responsible experience in a field directly related to permanent right-of-way improvement projects, OR
Eight years of architectural, engineering, or construction management experience in a field directly related to permanent right-of-way improvement projects, OR
California registration as a professional engineer or architect.
Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring:
- Managing multiple engineering disciplines on complex capital projects.
- Preparing and executing City contracts and using computer-based project management systems including Power BI.
