The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.

Role description

The purpose of the 2320 Registered Nurse Training Programs is to prepare registered nurses at any stage of their careers to provide safe and competent nursing care to all patients.

Under general supervision, performs professional nursing duties in hospitals, emergency hospitals, clinics, sanitariums and other institutions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Provides nursing care to patients within an assigned hospital Unit, Clinic, or any SFDPH setting that requires Registered Nursing care;
  • Observes and reports symptoms and conditions of patients;
  • Takes and records vital signs or other diagnostics including temperatures, respiration and pulse;
  • Reports unusual occurrences and unusual results of treatments;
  • Sets up treatment trays, prepares instruments and other equipment;
  • Implements medical and nursing care plans;
  • Directs and supervises the patient care provided by nursing personnel;
  • Maintains standard unit or clinic activities;
  • Assists in administering highly specialized therapy;
  • Maintains records reflecting patients' condition, medication, treatment and reactions;
  • Follows regulations, policies, and procedures for nursing care;
  • May direct the work of auxiliary sub-professional personnel in performing various tasks in assisting with the care and comfort of patients and the cleanliness and sanitation of ward, hospital beds, and appurtenant equipment; AND
  • Performs other related duties as assigned/required.

Medical-Surgical Care

  • Registered Nurses in this program will learn how to provide nursing care to acutely ill patients in a wide range of inpatient settings.

Perioperative Care

  • Registered Nurses in this program will learn how to provide nursing care within the Operating Room to patients undergoing surgical procedures.

Psychiatric Care

  • Registered Nurses in this program will learn how to provide nursing care to patients with mental health needs.

Minimum Qualifications

License: Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License (**IMPORTANT: Be sure to include your California RN license number in the application, as failure to do so may result in rejection of your application**);

The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of the List.
