Role description
Under general direction, the 7273-Communications Line Worker Supervisor II supervises the activities of field crews engaged in the construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground police, fire and other emergency communication systems.
Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Plans, assigns, supervises, inspects and evaluates the activities of subordinate supervisors and their crews of line workers engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground communication and traffic signal systems and equipment Plans and coordinates the work of subordinate supervisors and related personnel involved construction, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead police, fire, traffic and other emergency communications systems.
2. Makes field inspections of work in progress.
3. Prepares time and material cost estimates for work projects.
4. Requisitions materials and supplies.
5. Trains and supervises field crew.
6. Responds to emergencies, and reported malfunctioning.
7. Prepares written reports to document daily activities of field crews.
8. Drives city vehicle.
9. Makes and interprets maps, sketches and drawings for the installation of emergency communication systems.
10. Coordinates job site usage.
11. Attends various meetings and acts as liaison to other city departments.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Type:
This Permanent Exempt (PEX), Full Time position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointment officer. The anticipated duration of this project position is eighteen (18) months and will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring.
Nature of Work:
Incumbent must be willing to work 40-hour week as determined by the department. Travel within San Francisco may be required.
The incumbent must be a resident of the State of California or be willing to relocate within 4 weeks of beginning employment with the City and County of San Francisco.
The City and County of San Francisco does not sponsor visas. If you have an F1 student visa, the City will not sponsor the “optional practical training” requirement. All applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are legally able to work in the United States without visa sponsorship by the employer.
Work Location:
Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology, (200 Paul Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124). However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.
How to qualify
Experience: Four (4) years of verifiable journey-level experience as an electrical line worker in the construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground police, fire and other emergency communication systems and traffic signal systems and equipment. Three (3) years of this experience must have been supervising construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground police, fire and other emergency communication systems and traffic signal systems and equipment.
License: Valid Class C driver's license.
Desirable Qualifications:
Experience with planning, designing, estimating, and installing fiber.
Experience with working on high and low voltage infrastructure.
Knowledge of: Inspection techniques and procedures, knowledge of electrical theory; fundamentals and national electric codes; knowledge of safety practices and procedures; knowledge of overhead (pole line) and underground construction; knowledge of emergency communication systems maintenance, operation and installation.
Ability to: Read and interpret and make maps; ability to supervise and train staff; ability to communicate orally and in writing; human relations ability; ability to utilize a personal computer; ability to operate equipment and tools; ability to drive a motor vehicle.

1. MEDICAL TESTING: Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully pass the medical testing process.

SECURITY CLEARANCES AND BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS: Positions in this classification may require that successful candidates who become eligible for appointment may be required to go through a background investigation to determine the candidate's suitability for employment in this classification.
