The Policy Assistant for the Mayor’s Office of Justice Innovation will provide administrative, project, and analytical support to the Victim Rights Policy Advisor and the Project Director managing the diversion of calls for assistance away from a police response. This is a new position located within the Mayor’s Office and will be a member of the Mayor’s Policy Team.
The Mayor’s Office of Justice Innovation was created by Mayor London N. Breed in June of 2021 with the primary mission of implementing and further developing the Mayor’s public safety reforms which were initially announced in June 2020.
The Office of Justice Innovation is part of the Mayor’s Policy Team and is envisioned as a collaborative team comprised of the Policy Assistant, the Victim Rights Policy Advisor, the Project Director for diversion of police calls, the Public Safety Policy Advisor, and the Policy Advisors for Homelessness and Public Health as needed.
Role description
The Policy Assistant will be focused on the following: 1) supporting the Victim Rights’ Policy Advisor with the development and convening of an advisory body comprised of survivors of crime that will be working in partnership with the Victim Rights’ Policy Advisor to identify and solve for deficiencies in the city’s existing network of support for victims of crime; and 2) supporting the Project Director as this position manages the diversion of calls for assistance that are currently being answered by the police but can be safely diverted to other city departments with a response that does not involve sworn peace officers.
The essential responsibilities will include:
- Scheduling as requested by staff within the Office, particularly for large meetings;
- Assisting with organizing and managing community engagement and outreach meetings and events;
- Provide support to the Mayor and other Mayoral staff at events and meetings;
- Working on projects and other tasks as assigned;
- Acting as primary contact between the Survivors’ Council and the Office;
- Helping to develop policy, budget, and legislative recommendations for the Office;
You will be developing an understanding of the city’s relevant government operations, legislative process at local and state levels, effective communications with departmental contacts, and assisting with detailed analysis of policies and procedures relevant to victim rights and the public safety system of the city.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. One year of experience in general administrative or office management experience preferably in a public or community-based agency.
Desirable Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree in public policy, political science, public or business administration or finance. Experience in public policy. Familiarity with San Francisco and/or local resident. Strong interpersonal skills; strong communication skills both written and verbal; ability to work well under pressure and with a variety of individuals, including elected officials, department heads, legislative staff, community groups and representatives; computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel. Must be detail-oriented and able to manage multiple assignments from different projects.
