Role description

Under general supervision, the Electrician Supervisor I assists in coordinating, delegating, directing and reviewing the installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of both high and low voltage industrial and institutional electrical systems and their components, including the maintenance of closed circuit television and Access Control systems. Positions at the Department of Parking and Traffic assist in the coordinating and directing of the overall installation, servicing and repair of a large and complicated City-wide traffic signal system.

Essential Duties

  • Supervises subordinate personnel by coordinating, delegating, directing and reviewing work assignments, instructing crew in routine and emergency repair of a variety of electrical systems and their components. This includes the maintenance of closed-circuit television system (CCTV) used for security and the maintenance of an Access Control System.
  • Estimates costs, time and materials required to install and/or repair a variety of industrial and institutional electrical systems.
  • Schedules the maintenance and installation activities of subordinates.
  • Attends and holds meetings interdepartmentally as well as with personnel from other City departments. This includes design review and safety meetings.
  • Writes and maintains a variety of records and reports such as daily, weekly and monthly assignments, injury and accident reports and inventory material reports.
  • Makes regular contacts with City departments as well as members of the public to resolve electrical problems.
  • Purchases material required for inventory and the installation and repair of electrical systems.
  • Plans and directs the overall servicing and installation of the City's traffic signal and Airport traffic signal systems.
  • Oversees the installation and maintenance of fiber optic cabling used in all systems.
  • Maintains and services life safety systems.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

How to qualify

1a. Completion of a recognized Electricians' apprenticeship program and two years verifiable experience installing, servicing and repairing both high and low voltage electrical systems of up to 600 volts, devices, and related components including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and typical solenoid motor controllers as a journey-level Electrician; 
                                                            OR
1b.
A combination of training and verifiable work experience installing, servicing and repairing both high and low voltage electrical systems of up to 600 volts, devices, and related components including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and typical solenoid motor controllers as a journey-level Electrician totaling six years
                                                            AND
2. 
Possession of a current valid driver license;
                                                            AND
3.
Possession of computer application skills necessary to perform the duties of an Electrician Supervisor I.

EXAM INFORMATION

Combined, Promotive and Entrance
Certification Rule: Rule of Three (3)
Eligible List Duration: Twelve (12) months.
The duration of the eligible list may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director. 

Selection Procedures
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

  1. Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) completed online (Qualifying)
  2. In-Person Written Essay Exam (50%)
  3. Online Oral Exam (50%)

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ)
Once the application is closed, qualified candidates will be sent a Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) to complete.  Failure to complete this step by the established deadline will result in disqualification.  Candidates deemed qualified will be invited to the in-person written exam. 
Written Exam (50%)
Candidates deemed qualified will be admitted to a written in-person essay exam designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of Industrial and institutional electrical systems; and safety rules and regulations; Supervisory abilities, interpersonal skills, ability to understand and interpret schematic drawings, blueprints and layout work; communication skills.
Oral Exam (50%)
Candidates who attain a minimum passing score on the written essay will be invited to participate in an oral examination designed measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of Industrial and institutional electrical systems; and safety rules and regulations; Supervisory abilities, interpersonal skills, ability to understand and interpret schematic drawings, blueprints and layout work; communication skills.  The oral exam will be conducted virtually, online. 

Only qualified candidates of the oral exam will be notified of the exact date and time of the written and oral examination. 
A passing score must be achieved on the written and oral exam components in order to continue in the selection process and be placed on the eligible list.
Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions

Score Report/Eligible List
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
