About:

The San Francisco Health Network is the City's only complete care system and it includes health care for all ages: primary care, dentistry, emergency and trauma treatment, medical and surgical specialties, behavioral health, diagnostic testing, and skilled nursing and rehabilitation. The full-time 2210 Dentist provides dental and oral health services in SFHN at a primary care or specialty clinic, health center, or other patient care site.

Role description

Under general supervision, the Dental Hygienist performs the following essential job functions:

  • Performs all duties of a dental hygienist as per the California Dental Practice Act guidelines
  • Assesses oral health (expose and develop x-rays, oral cancer screening, probe for periodontal disease)
  • Performs oral prophylaxis, administration of local anesthesia, soft-tissue curettage, and scaling and root planing
  • Applies preventive materials including pit and fissure sealants and fluoride
  • Provides oral health instructions (brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling)
  • Provides training and education to patients, nurses, school personnel, students, interns, dental assistants and staff on dental health, dental disease prevention and program operations
  • Develops, implements and modifies procedures for providing oral health services
  • Develops dental health information materials and distributes to providers, staff, clients as well as other intra/interagency programs
  • Assists in coordinating the case management of dental/oral cases
  • Assists in the coordination and implementation of school education, screening and sealant programs
  • Participates in planning program activities. Assists in setting goals, objectives and scope of work
  • Tracks program data for use in evaluating program effectiveness
  • Prepares quarterly, annual and program reports as requested/required
  • Works with dental providers and school personnel in implementing dental programs and increasing access to dental care
  • Recruits dental providers and expands oral health services by maintaining and updating lists of community dental resources
  • Maintains dental supply inventory (determining inventory, anticipating needs, placing orders, verifies receipt)
  • Ensures operation of dental equipment (following manufacturer’s instructions, completing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs)
  • Set up and breakdown of dental clinic equipment
  • Travel between clinics and community sites in the performance of duties

How to qualify

Required

  • Possession of a valid Registered Dental Hygienist License issued by the Dental Hygienist Committee of California; AND
  • One year of verifiable full-time experience as a Dental Hygienist;
    AND
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain within two weeks of hire, and maintenance of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a forty-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment. Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. 

Desired

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in life sciences such as biology, physiology, public health, etc.
  • Two years of experience performing duties as a dental hygienist
  • Strong background in public health
  • Desire to work with patients who have multiple chronic problems, which may include medical, mental health, substance abuse, and psychosocial problems
  • Sensitivity to and experience working with ethnically, and culturally diverse individuals, communities, agencies and organizations
