The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services. 

The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future and current vacancies in this class at other locations within the DPH for the duration of the eligible list. 

Role description

Under general supervision, the Pharmacy Helper performs inventory and delivery activities for the Pharmacy Department.

Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Receives, unpacks, checks in, delivers, stocks, and stores pharmaceutical and supplies shipments.
  • Fills pharmaceutical requisitions on behalf of the pharmacy and the clinic.
  • Rotates stock and maintains pharmaceutical inventory using related computer, barcoding, and other IT technology.
  • Inventories and restocks supplies for pharmacy dispensing areas.
  • Orders pharmacy supplies as appropriate.
  • Assists in maintaining pharmacy security and organization of equipment, supplies, pharmacy records, and pharmaceuticals.
  • Keeps and maintains the pharmacy storage areas in a clean and organized manner.
  • Delivers medications to appropriate units while using appropriate precautions as indicated.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

How to qualify

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; AND
2. One (1) year (equivalent to 2,000 hours) of experience in performing the duties of a porter,
shipping and/or receiving clerk, or stock person.

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work
experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per
week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Experience working in a pharmacy or hospital.
  •  Experience working with inventory control.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates will be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Assessment Component
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in Multiple Choice exam that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas which may include but not be limited to:

Written Examination (Weight: 100%):
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a written multiple choice examination designed to measure their relative knowledge, skills and abilities in job-related areas. The multiple-choice examination component may include, but is not be limited to: knowledge of pharmacy inventory and procedures; basic mathematical skills; ability to prepare and maintain accurate, routine reports and records; interpersonal ability; written communication ability; and computer ability.

This is a standardized multiple-choice examination. Inspection privileges do not apply to the questions and answers in this examination. The examination will only be offered in person in San Francisco. Candidates must achieve a passing score on all selection procedures in order to be ranked on the eligible list. Candidate scores on this exam may also be applied to other announcements involving other job titles, when directed by the Human Resources Director.

Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of 10 Scores.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
