Introduction

Under general supervision, supervises the maintenance, replacement, and repair of electric railway tracks and/or cable car roadway tracks and related equipment and components.

Distinguishing Features

The 7251 Track Maintenance Worker Supervisor I is the first-level supervisor. This job code is distinguished from 7540 Track Maintenance Worker in that the latter is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of light rail vehicle railway tracks and/or repair of cable car roadway tracks and related equipment and components.

Supervision Exercised

Incumbents in this job code exercise supervision over Track Maintenance Workers and support personnel.

Major, Important, and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Supervises, inspects and assists, (if necessary), in the replacement, alignment, repair and maintenance of all light rail components; including the tightening of bolts on joint plates; lifting rails, disengaging rail components from asphalt or concrete; laying out job site; excavating track structure, gauge and cross level tracks; and tamping of rails into position.

2. Prepares a variety of reports and maintains records; requisitions materials and supplies, and inputs data in the computer system utilizing San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) software; and manages the SFMTA enterprise asset management system.

3. Supervises, inspects, and assists,(if necessary), in the routine repair of propulsion cable line equipment and facilities; and supervises the maintenance, repair and replacement of track switches, preempt light switches, strand alarms, carrier and crown pulleys and depression beam components and turntable components.

4. Supervises, assigns, inspects, assists, (if necessary), and allocates the greasing and lubrication of bearing and turntable components; and supervises and assigns the routine replacement, alignment, repair and maintenance of propulsion cables and the cleaning of line pits and channels.

5. Plans, assigns and evaluates the work of subordinate staff; coordinates and evaluates activities; provides instruction and training as needed and takes corrective action in case of deficiencies.

6. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Important and Essential Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: the appropriate methods for maintaining, gauging, surfacing, lining and repairing railway tracks and special track work; and track work in the subway, yard and surface locations including embedded track work in shared rows; the propulsion system of cable car trackway machinery, specifically the crown, drum, hold-down and guide pulleys, safety latches, bumper bars, take-rope gypsies, grip take-outs, deep pull curve pulley assemblies, pull curve chafing bar assemblies, strand alarms, preempt light switch, track and slot rails and other related parts; methods to replace defective or worn parts; the methods and procedures used to ensure the safety of individuals who may be exposed to hazardous and/or unsafe conditions; appropriate use of safety equipment; and applicable regulations set by federal, state and local regulatory agencies.

Ability to: use various hand and power tools and equipment needed to repair and maintain railway tracks (both embedded and open) and the repair of pavement immediately adjacent to the track; use various hand and power tools and equipment/materials needed to inspect, test, service, various components of cable machinery; direct, plan, assign and evaluate the work of subordinates; relate effectively with subordinates, supervisors, co-workers and members of the public sometimes under pressure; speak in a clear, concise and organized manner; listen with understanding; prepare reports and memos in a clear and concise manner; read and comprehend written materials; use a computer in the performance of duties; and lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 95 pounds for a distance of approximately 5 to 12 feet.

Minimum Qualifications

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Experience

For positions with Railway Track

Two (2) years of verifiable full-time journey-level experience in the replacement, repair and maintenance of railway track equivalent to that of the City and County of San Francisco job code 7540 Track Maintenance Worker; OR

Two (2) years of verifiable full-time journey-level experience in the assembly, repair and maintenance of railway track components.

For positions with Cable Car

Two (2) years of verifiable full-time journey-level experience in the replacement, repair and maintenance of cable car components equivalent to that of the City and County of San Francisco job code 7540 Track Maintenance Worker; OR

Two (2) years of verifiable full-time journey-level experience in cable car roadway track field and in the fabrication, repair and maintenance of cable car components.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION

Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C driver license.

Some positions may require possession of a valid DMV Medical Examiner�s Certificate as a condition of assignment to such position(s).

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Nature of work: requires exerting considerable physical effort, working in adverse weather and working conditions, working in confined spaces and hazardous traffic conditions, and lifting and carrying heavy equipment and tools. May be required to wear a respirator. Incumbents are required to work day, swing and graveyard shifts, holidays and weekends.
