Title: ELECTRIC MOTOR REPAIR SUPERVISOR I
Job Code: 7256
DEFINITION
Under direction, supervises and participates in skilled electrical work in the maintenance and repair of electric motors, generators, starters, and similar electrical equipment; and performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
This is a first level supervisor position that is distinguished from the lower job code 7319 Electric Motor Repair Technician in that the latter performs at the journey level with no supervisory responsibility.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Incumbents in this job code exercise supervision over staff of the Electric Motor Repair Shop.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Supervises the repair and overhauling of a wide variety of electrical motors, starters, generators, electric controls and equipment; inspects completed work to assure conformance with instructions, safety requirements and workmanship.
2. Operates, inspects, and supervises the operation and care of a variety of shop tools, machinery, and equipment used in the repair and overhauling of electric motors and equipment.
3. Prepares and oversees the maintenance of records and documents related to employees, and other documents related to the service, repair, and maintenance of motor shop related equipment, including time and cost records of the various jobs; uses a computer and computer related programs.
4. Oversees and conducts safety meetings and training to ensure compliance with state and federal safety regulations (includes hazardous materials), SFMTA wide objectives, etc.
5. Establishes goals and objectives for the shift; explains and carries out existing methods and procedures.
6. Provides direction to subordinates in the cleaning and day-to-day maintenance of all rolling stock.
7. Monitors the development and advancement of subordinates.
8. Coordinates with outside vendors and interdepartmental support shops to ensure the availability of equipment and supplies.
9. Drives non-revenue vehicles as required.
10. Performs other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:: the fundamentals of electricity; the methods and techniques utilized in the repair of electrical motors, starters, generators and similar equipment; the tools, machines and equipment utilized in electrical repair work.
Ability or Skill to: assign and instruct subordinate personnel; analyze and determine malfunctions of electrical equipment and carry out proper corrective measures;
clearly and effectively communicate orally and in writing; comprehend written materials; use a computer and associated software; interact with others in a professional manner.
Requires considerable skill in the use of tools and equipment necessary to the repair of motors, starters, generators and similar types of electrical equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Eight (8) years of full-time verifiable experience of which four (4) years must have been as a journey - level electric motor repair technician, where duties included the electrical and mechanical repair of all types of motors, motor-generators, coils, stator and armature windings, and troubleshooting control circuitry and related devices.
License and Certification:
Possession of a valid Class C driver license.
Substitution:
Training in a recognized four (4) year apprenticeship program in electric motor winding repair may substitute for up to four (4) years of the required non-journey-level experience on a year-for-year basis.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Nature of work requires: some physical effort and dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body; continuous exposure to physical and working conditions where minor injuries may occur.

Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
