Definition:
Under general direction, performs a variety of welding functions in connection with the repair and maintenance of facilities, street and subway railway track, transit vehicles and related equipment using oxyacetylene or electric arc welding methods.
Distinguishing Features:
The 7390 Welder performs skilled welding work related to the repair and maintenance of facilities, various types of transit vehicles and related equipment. The 7390 Welder is distinguished from Class 7360 Pipe Welder in that the latter installs, repairs and maintains water distribution pipelines and related facilities.
Supervision Exercised: None.
Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Welds, brazes and burns broken and worn parts and repairs various types of equipment at various locations throughout the city.
2. Welds street railway track parts, switches, mates and frogs at various locations throughout the city.
3. Makes repairs to other allied equipment for cable cars, street cars, trolley coaches, gas and diesel buses.
4. Lays out and fabricates piping systems, tanks, street repair and earth moving equipment parts.
5. Burns rails and bolts and grip dies.
6. Cuts plates for channel work on cable lines at various locations throughout the city.
7. Welds wheel flanges, repairs metal panels and other allied equipment.
8. Builds up, corrects, lays out and fabricates jigs and dies.
9. Makes all necessary welding repairs to shop equipment and maintenance vehicles, including fire apparatus frames, bumpers, motor blocks, gears and housing; aerial ladders, bodies and component parts, and attachments.
10. Scrapes, files, chips and grinds metal parts after completion of necessary welding operations.
11. Completes various daily tasks sheets and work related documents when necessary.
12. Performs other duties as required.
Job Related and Essential Qualifications:
Knowledge of: methods, procedures, practices and processes in welding, cutting and brazing using oxyacetylene and electric arc welding; and basic safety practices required for safe use of tools, materials and equipment.
Ability to: use and operate hand tools, oxyacetylene, electric and other welding equipment; deal effectively and courteously with staff, and personnel of other divisions; and understand and follow oral or written instructions.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
1. Three (3) years of experience as a journey-level welder using oxyacetylene and electric arc welding methods; AND
2. Possession of a valid class C driver license.

SUBSTITUTION:
Completion of a recognized training program in the field of welding may be substituted for one year of the required journey-level experience. Applicants qualifying under this provision must submit a certificate demonstrating completion of the training program from an accredited junior or community college, trade school or technical institution.

Disaster service work

Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.
