Seniority Credit

Applicants for promotive only or combined promotive and entrance examinations shall meet the requirements of the examination announcement under which they apply. If otherwise qualified, employees with six (6) consecutive months (1040 hours) of verifiable experience in any job classification in any appointment type qualify as promotive applicants.

Veteran Entitlement Points

Veteran Entitlement Points provide an additional five percent (5%) credit of the qualifying score on an entrance eligible list to a qualified candidate's overall score.

Veteran's Preference Points are only applied to applications for entrance employment. This means that once a qualified candidate accepts a position with Veteran Entitlement Points applied, these points will be removed from the candidate's profile on all other eligible lists after the probationary period for the hired position has passed.

Veterans with a permanent service-connected disability, as recorded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, may apply for a disability credit of (10%) of the qualifying score. Disabled veterans, as defined here, are entitled to all rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act, including reasonable accommodations when appropriate.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for Veteran Entitlement Points, applicants must:

  • Achieve a passing score on the entrance selection process.
  • Not have previously used Veteran Entitlement Points in an entrance examination that resulted in a permanent appointment.
  • Have served on active (non-reserve) duty and been released under conditions other than dishonorable. Specific timeframes are listed below:
    • At least 30 days of active duty during wartime or peacetime in a campaign or expedition for which the U.S. government has authorized a medal;
    • Between September 16, 1940, and January 31, 1955;
    • After January 31, 1955, for at least 181 consecutive days of active duty.
  • Widows, widowers, or surviving domestic partners of deceased eligible veterans are qualified for the Veteran Entitlement Points.
