Job description
SAN FRANCISCO CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
CLASS TITLE: MOBILE EQUIPMENT ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR CODE: 7110
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under direction: Assigns, supervises and recommends on the work performed by truck drivers engaged in a variety of projects relating to roads, paths, excavations, and other similar construction and maintenance projects: performs related duties, as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES:
Positions in this class are located in a centralized motor equipment pool and supervise small-to-medium size groups of truck drivers directly engaged in the operation of trucks and heavy equipment. Positions in this class are distinguished from the higher level class of Mobile Equipment Supervisor in that they do not have overall program responsibility for planning, scheduling, and monitoring the assignment of personnel and mobile equipment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Assigns and supervises truck drivers engaged in construction, repair, and maintenance of sewers, streets and/or highways, buildings and grounds, or related work, dispatches equipment and drivers.
2. Keeps records of time worked by truck drivers: requisitions materials and initiates repairs to equipment when necessary and assists in management of the mobile equipment rental rate system.
3. Inspects proposed projects and recommends on the equipment to be employed in accomplishing work; assures that necessary safety precautions are observed in all equipment operations; conducts safety meetings and assists in establishing improved safety procedures.
4. Confers with other departmental personnel. Central Shops supervisors, and mechanics on matters pertaining to equipment assignment, performance and repair.
5. Assists in preparing mobile equipment specifications and in developing, equipment modification recommendations.
6. Responsible for training of drivers and operators in proper and safe equipment operation to include Class I, Class II and special construction equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: Requires completion of high school, supplemented by three (3) years of responsible experience in the operation of a variety of trucks or equipment.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Requires a thorough knowledge of: Construction and maintenance equipment operations particularly as applicable to the assignment of truck drivers and motorized heavy equipment; the operation, maintenance and servicing requirements of a wide variety of vehicles and heavy equipment.
Requires ability to: Plan, coordinate and supervise the work of truck drivers, explain work methods and procedures to subordinates from detailed instructions, including procedures for proper equipment operations.
License: Requires possession of a Class I driver's license.

Disaster service work
All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
