Definition:

Under general direction, supervises the activities of field crews engaged in the construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground police, fire and other emergency communication systems. The essential duties assigned to this class include: planning, assigning, supervising, inspecting and evaluating the activities of subordinate supervisors and their crew of electrical line helpers, electrical line workers and cable splicers engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground communication and traffic signal systems and equipment for the operation of police, fire and other emergency communication systems equipment; making field inspections; preparing time and material cost estimates for projects and making field surveys and preliminary estimates and plans for system modifications; requisitioning materials and supplies; trains and supervising field crews; responding to emergencies or reported malfunctioning and/or damaged communication systems; preparing written activity reports; making and interpreting maps, sketches and drawings; coordinating job site usage, attending various meetings and acting as liaison to other departments.

Distinguishing Features: The Communications Line Worker Supervisor II is the senior supervisory level in this series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Communications Line Worker Supervisor I level in that the latter's performs less complex and difficult tasks and is supervised by the Communications Line Worker Supervisor II

Supervision Exercised: Supervises the activities of Communications Line Worker Supervisor I, and field crews engaged in installation, maintenance and repair of emergency communications systems.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Plans, assigns, supervises, inspects and evaluates the activities of subordinate supervisors and their crews of line workers engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground communication and traffic signal systems and equipment Plans and coordinates the work of subordinate supervisors and related personnel involved construction, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead police, fire, traffic and other emergency communications systems.

2. Makes field inspections of work in progress.

3. Prepares time and material cost estimates for work projects.

4. Requisitions materials and supplies.

5. Trains and supervises field crew.

6. Responds to emergencies, and reported malfunctioning.

7. Prepares written reports to document daily activities of field crews.

8. Drives city vehicle.

9. Makes and interprets maps, sketches and drawings for the installation of emergency communication systems.

10. Coordinates job site usage.

11. Attends various meetings and acts as liaison to other city departments.

12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Related And Essential Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Inspection techniques and procedures, knowledge of electrical theory; fundamentals and national electric codes; knowledge of safety practices and procedures; knowledge of overhead (pole line) and underground construction; knowledge of emergency communication systems maintenance, operation and installation.

Ability to: Read and interpret and make maps; ability to supervise and train staff; ability to communicate orally and in writing; human relations ability; ability to utilize a personal computer; ability to operate equipment and tools; ability to drive a motor vehicle.

Experience And Training Guidelines:

Experience: Four (4) years of verifiable journey-level experience as an electrical line worker in the construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground police, fire and other emergency communication systems and traffic signal systems and equipment. Three (3) years of this experience must have been supervising construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground police, fire and other emergency communication systems and traffic signal systems and equipment.

License: Valid Class C driver's license.

Disaster service work

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
