Title: Heavy Duty Mechanic/Automotive Machinist Apprentice II

Job Code: 7302

DEFINITION

Under close guidance and direct supervision, performs apprentice work in support of the 7323 Heavy Duty Mechanic/Automotive Machinist, such as assisting in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of heavy-duty and off-road vehicles and power-driven equipment, such as diesel trucks and buses, firefighting vehicles, compressors, generators, graders, backhoes, tractors, small engines (lawn mowers, etc.) and electric motors (on carts, etc.) and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The 7302 Heavy Duty Mechanic/Automotive Machinist Apprentice II is a training level classification in the Heavy Duty Mechanic/Automotive Machinist series. Class 7302 is distinguished from the next higher class 7323 Heavy Duty Mechanic/Automotive Machinist in that the incumbents in the latter classes independently perform the full range of duties at the journey level.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Learns to maintain, repair, overhaul, and service heavy-duty and off-road vehicles and power-driven equipment using hand tools, power tools and machine tools such as lathes, drill presses, grinders, boring bars, valves refining tools and other machine tools.

2. Learns to design, fabricate and weld parts.

3. Assists with maintaining records of equipment mileage, service/repair logs, materials and parts logs, and equipment and parts orders.

4. Assists with responding to incoming emergency calls and may go to the site of the breakdown; may assist with towing vehicles.

5. Learns to inspect, test, and review vehicles and equipment as part of the preventive maintenance program.

6. Learns to diagnose malfunctions using test equipment, manufacturers� specifications and repair manuals, and observation both in the shop and in the field in order to determine needed repairs.

7. Assists with ordering supplies, parts and materials necessary for the maintenance, repair and servicing of equipment and vehicles.

8. Drives city vehicles and assists with operating equipment to diagnose malfunctions and to conduct final inspection of work completed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Education:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).

Experience:

License and Certification:

Possession of at least a Class C (or III) driver license at the time of application; ability to obtain a Class A (or I) and Class B (or II) driver license and Medical Certificate at the time of appointment.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Nature of work: involves some physical effort and considerable dexterity in the use of the fingers, limbs and body; continuous exposure to physical and working conditions where minor injuries may occur. May be required to work nights, weekends and/or holidays.

PROMOTIVE LINES

The Apprentice is expected to complete satisfactorily, the training and related instruction for each type of equipment, process, and procedure and to qualify for advancement to journey level status.

Standard information

Disaster service work

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
