Job description

CITY AND COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO

DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES

TITLE: METAL FABRICATOR

JOB CODE: 7305

INTRODUCTION

Under general supervision, performs skilled metal fabrication work in forging, shaping and bending metals for the manufacture, repair and maintenance of machinery, equipment and facilities; and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Class 7305 Metal Fabricator is a journey level class with no promotive lines. It is distinguished from the 7395 Ornamental Ironworker in that incumbents in the latter class perform skilled work in connection with the installation, maintenance and repair of steel rolling doors, chain link fences, ornamental iron and other metal structures.

MAJOR, IMPORTANT, AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Forges, forms, bends, shapes, hardens and tempers various metals.

2. Lays out, prefabricates, welds and installs new work.

3. Replaces and renews worn and broken parts, tools and other equipment for cable cars, rail cars, buses, and other public transportation systems.

4. Restores, straightens and aligns damaged, broken or worn vehicular and other equipment component parts.

5. Designs and fabricates parts, tools, brackets and other equipment.

6. Forges and sharpens tools, picks and other equipment.

7. Operates electric and gas welding equipment in connection with metal fabricating work.

8. Repairs or forges new tools; hardens and tempers punches, dies, shears and other tools.

9. Works from blueprints, shop sketches, drawings, patterns or models.

10. Finishes metal parts after completion of necessary fabrication processes.

11. Makes all necessary fabrication and welding repairs to shop equipment and maintenance vehicles.

12. Drives a vehicle to work sites and other locations to complete work assignments and other work related tasks.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: methods and procedures used in forging, forming, bending, shaping, hardening, tempering, heat treating, finishing, and welding (electric and gas) various metals; methods and procedures, including all applicable OSHA regulations, necessary to ensure safety of metal fabricators and other employees from potential hazards while working with hot metals and dangerous tools and equipment; basic composition, characteristics, and uses of commonly used metals and equipment in the metal fabricating trade, such as oxyacetylene and various types and grades of metals.

Ability to: use hand, mechanical and welding tools and equipment for metal fabricating work, such as hammer, sledgehammer, anvil, vices, C-clamps, carts, stepladder, wire wheel, welding mask, grinders, metal press, lifting boom, smog hog exhaust system, arc and MIG welder, welding torch, and shop vac; understand and utilize the designs and measurements indicated on equipment or specific parts in order to detail and lay out work prior to fabrication; lay out, prefabricate, and fabricate parts, tools and brackets for transit vehicles and other equipment; communicate orally with supervisors, co-workers and other departmental personnel; interpret designs and measurements indicated on equipment or specific parts; work cooperatively with co-workers of all levels, including the ability to guide co-workers when necessary in order to complete projects; operate a vehicle to drive to worksites while carrying out assigned duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

1. Three (3) years of fulltime verifiable experience as a journey level metal fabricator, ornamental ironworker, metalsmith, blacksmith or welder involved in general metal fabrication, metal forming, and welding work. This experience must include oxyacetylene, SMAW, MIG and TIG welding and carbon air arc cutting; AND

2. Ability to lift 60 lbs. (will be tested during probationary period.)

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION

Possession of a valid Class C driver license.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Nature of work: Requires sustained physical effort involving considerable standing, bending and occasional heavy lifting (must be able to lift at least 60 lbs.); may be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including a respirator; exposure to conditions where moderately serious cuts, burns or bruises may be encountered, with intermittent exposure to disagreeable working conditions.

Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.
