7373 SENIOR STATIONARY ENGINEER, SEWAGE PLANT

Definition:

Under general direction, during an assigned shift, is responsible for supervising and instructing workers in the safe operation, maintenance and repair of plant machinery and equipment in an assigned area of a sewage treatment plant, or several sewage pumping stations; personally participates in operation and/or maintenance and repair activities on plant machinery and equipment; and performs related duties as required.

Distinguishing Features:

Job code 7373 is a first-level supervisory position in an assigned area of a sewage treatment plant and/or pumping stations. This job code is distinguished from job code 7252 Chief Stationary Engineer, sewage treatment plant, in that the latter exercises supervision over an entire unit in a division, and participates in plant operational planning.

Supervision Exercised:

Supervises subordinates during an assigned shift, in an assigned area of a sewage treatment plant.

Example of Important and Essential Duties:

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 9, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Makes regular inspection of treatment plant or assigned station to assure all equipment is functioning properly and all units are properly manned.

2. Supervises subordinates and instructs them in operational changeover of machinery and equipment substitutions in case of emergencies.

3. Supervises and trains subordinates in operation, maintenance and repair techniques and processes.

4. Checks plant log entries and sample collection activities of subordinates.

5. Makes required entries in plant log and prepares summary of the plant log on the completion of assigned shift.

6. Supervises and personally participates in making major or minor repairs to all treatment plant and pumping station machinery and equipment, including motor line starters, relays, automatic switches and a wide variety of metering and recording devices.

7. Checks and reviews completed work of subordinate plant operating personnel.

8. Requests materials, supplies and equipment necessary for maintenance and repair activities.

9. Makes regular bacteriological and chemical tests, sub-professional in nature and limited in variety, on raw sewage, raw sludge, effluent and digested sludge.

Job Related and Essential Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

The operation and maintenance requirements of a wide variety of mechanical and electrical pumps, motors, controls and meter equipment; plumbing, steam-fitting and electrical repair work;

the operation and servicing of internal combustion engines.

Ability to:

Analyze, maintain and repair a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment; make minor or major repairs to machinery and equipment as necessary; maintain plant operating records.

Skills:

Requires considerable skill in the use of hand tools as needed in the maintenance and repair of equipment.

Positions located at the San Francisco Airport require technical knowledge and skill to conduct bacteriological and chemical tests of various stages of the sewage treatment processes.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

1. Possession of a valid driver's license; AND EITHER

2. Five (5) years of verifiable journey level stationary engineer experience in the operation

or maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant; OR

3. Completion of a recognized four-year Stationary Engineer, Sewage Plant Apprenticeship

Program, plus one (1) year of experience as a journey level stationary engineer in a Wastewater treatment plant; AND EITHER

4. Possession of a current Grade III or higher California Wastewater Treatment Plant

Operator Certificate at the time of appointment to an operator position at a plant; OR

5. Possession of Grade III or higher California Water Environment Mechanical Technology

Certificate at the time of appointment to a position in the Maintenance Division of PUC

Water Pollution Control.

Disaster service work
