JOB CODE TITLE: WIRE ROPE CABLE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC JOB CODE: 7472

DEFINITION

The Wire Rope Maintenance Mechanic is a journey-level position responsible for the maintenance and operation of the wire rope cable traction system in the Cable Car Division of the Municipal Railway.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Under the supervision of the 7286 Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Supervisor, the 7472 Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Mechanic works under general supervision as the fully trained journey-level mechanic in this series. This class is distinguished from class 7473 Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Trainee in that the latter is the trainee position. 7472 Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Mechanics train and mentor 7473 Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Trainees.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Inspects cables for defects.

2. Repairs, splices and lubricates traction cables.

3. Splices fiber and wire rope slings, including manufacturing wire components for cable car braking systems.

4. Performs proper rigging responsibilities to complete necessary tasks.

5. Installs new cables; adjusts and maintains cable and related equipment.

6. Inspects, repairs and installs sheaves, lagging and component parts.

7. Oversees the activities of crews assigned to cable repair.

8. Operates overhead crane and machinery and non-revenue motor vehicles.

9. Completes daily reports and other related documentation.

10.. Trains and mentors Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Trainees.

11. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: techniques for splicing fiber and wire rope slings, including eye-splicing, long splicing and knot tying; rigging; tools, materials and equipment used in wire rope cable maintenance; safety methods and procedures, including all applicable OSHA regulations in connection with cable splicing and repair activities.

Ability and Skill to: Promote and maintain effective personal relations and communications; maintain a professional demeanor; produce results based on project time-frames; deal effectively under pressure; listen with understanding and comprehension; utilize related electronic communication technology such as 2-way radios and cell phones; write and speak clearly and effectively; appropriately document and maintain records; operate non-revenue motor vehicles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Experience:

Three years of verifiable wire rope cable splicing experience which must include eye-splicing, long splicing, knot tying in fiber rope, and rigging (One year of experience must have been in Class 7473 Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Trainee); OR

Two years of experience in Class 7473 Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Trainee; OR

Three (3) years of journey-level work experience in the operation and maintenance of a wire rope traction cable system and its related component parts and equipment. This must include experience in installing, repairing and long splicing wire rope traction cable.

Note: Experience in electrical wire splicing, telecommunication cable splicing, fiber optic cable splicing or related fields, is not qualifying.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION

Possession of a Class C driver license.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

The nature of work involves considerable physical effort to perform mechanical tasks. Incumbents may be required to work any shift including nights, weekends and holidays; wear personal protective equipment (PPE); lift up to 98 lbs; work in adverse weather and conditions such as rain, cold, dirt and dust, and work in narrow, awkward, and confined spaces and in very noisy surroundings around machinery. May work in hot environments and work in close proximity of others.
