Title: Transportation Controller Trainee
Job Code: 9152
DEFINITION
This class exists as part of the Transportation Controller Trainee Program to develop professional competence as a journey level Transportation Controller while working under the guidance and supervision of SFMTA Transportation Management Center (TMC) and Training staff. Transportation Controller Trainees perform relatively routine tasks designed to train the incumbents to independently perform a range of activities in the TMC. Work is performed under close supervision and is evaluated on the basis of progress in a structured work experience training program. Incumbents work with increased independence as professional competence is demonstrated. Demonstrated professional competence and successful completion of the structured training program leads to eligibility to compete for a 9153 Transportation Controller position. Failure to achieve demonstrated professional competence or the inability to complete the training program results in release from the Trainee position.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
The 9152 Transportation Controller Trainee class is the trainee level class of the professional Transportation Controller class series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents perform transportation control work while participating in a structured training program and training on transportation control policies, procedures and systems. This class is distinguished from class 9153 Transportation Controller by the structured training program requirements and the transitioning nature of the trainee class.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Participate in a structured on-the-job training program including, but not limited to, the following:
a. Monitoring bus, trolley, surface light rail, and subway transit system operations using system devices and equipment to assess information on operations activities and external conditions affecting operations.
b. Operating automated equipment systems in real time on computer workstations using complex software systems displayed on multiple monitors/systems.
c. Using Computer Aided Dispatch / Automated Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL), traffic signal control for bus rapid transit, control street level closed circuit TV cameras.
d. Interpreting visual or graphic information from the Transportation Management Center display wall.
e. Monitoring and responding to multiple-information feeds.
f. Analyzing operational information and understanding applications of road and service maps, video image displays, graphical text data, icons, and transportation modes and symbols in written/digital formats.
g. Assessing and addressing in-service vehicle operation problems.
h. Posting messages to public information systems.
i. Coordinating transportation control with SFGov's traffic management systems.
j. Operating the digital radio system.
k. Performing other transportation control related tasks.
2. Attend classroom-style training related to transportation control functions including, but not limited to, the following:
a. Transportation control standard operating procedures.
b. Critical thinking and decision-making.
c. Control Room coordination protocols.
d. Oral and written communication skills.
3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: transit lines, line management techniques, schedules and equipment necessary to coordinate and maintain safe and effective transit operations; traffic patterns and their impact on transit corridors necessary to effectively reroute and reschedule transit equipment; emergency procedures necessary to quickly and safely assist passengers, the public and transit personnel in emergency situations; and radio communication terminology necessary to expediently and effectively handle emergency situations.
Ability or Skill to: read maps/schematics, and character text information, including visual, audio and emergency graphic icons; analyze operational information; make real-time decisions and choose appropriate solutions by exercising sound judgment in making recommendations within guidelines; exercise human relations/interpersonal skills to deal courteously and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds; speak clearly and effectively in order to give instructions, answer questions, respond to daily operational incidents; write instructions, reports, memos, correspondence, documents, and records in a clear, concise, and accurate manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.
The following are required to be possessed as of the filing deadline for applications:
1. Three (3) years of experience equivalent to San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency job codes 9139 Transit Supervisor and/or 9136 Transit Training Specialist; OR
2. Five (5) years of experience, within the past ten (10) years, as a rail vehicle operator; OR
3. Two (2) years of experience working in a central control environment responsible for the movement of rail vehicles or buses for a local, state, or federal transportation agency.
The following must be possessed as of the filing deadline for applications and maintained throughout the duration of appointment. These minimum qualifications ensure that hires will possess necessary standards of delivering safe and quality service.
1. No accidents where applicant contributed to the cause (i.e., preventable) in the previous thirty-six (36) months; AND
2. No preventable non-collision safety incidents in the previous twelve (12) months; AND
3. No suspensions in the previous twelve (12) months; AND
4. No Performance Appraisals within the previous twelve (12) months with an overall determination of unsatisfactory performance.
The following will be assessed during the probationary period:
1. Ability to utilize software applications related to the work of the assigned unit.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Nature of work: requires working in a fast-paced and safety critical environment; sitting for extended periods of time; constantly viewing display monitors; and working rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. In addition, employees may wear headsets.

Disaster service work
All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
